Washoe County will be installing security fencing to protect North Spanish Springs Detention Facility

by | Aug 23, 2023

Washoe County Community Services Department (CSD) will be installing perimeter security fencing around the North Spanish Springs Floodplain Detention Facility, starting in October.  This project will both protect the facility and infrastructure and reduce the sound and dust impacts around the facility.

The North Spanish Springs Floodplain Detention Facility was completed in 2008 to capture and collect stormwater and flood waters generated in the Spanish Springs Valley, and then release those waters through the large drainage channel to the south where they ultimately flow to the Truckee River.

The facility is popular for hiking and dog-walking and will remain accessible for these activities. Gates and entry points will be available for pedestrian access, but no off-highway or motorized vehicles will be allowed due to their negative impacts causing damage to the facility as well causing noise and dust issues in the area.
