Washoe County Recognizes National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week

by | Apr 12, 2021

The National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA) recognizes the second full week in April each year, as National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week to acknowledge the importance of the work that animal care and control personnel do each and every day.

Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) provides invaluable services to the citizens and animals in Washoe County seven days a week. Annually, field staff will respond to over 33,000 calls. They capture loose animals (sometimes dangerous), investigate animal neglect and cruelty, rescue sick or injured animals, provide educational resources to pet owners about laws and responsible pet ownership and help to reunite lost animals with their owners. Kennel staff provide care for an average of 13,000 animals annually, and work hard with rescue groups to create better outcomes for animals that are abandoned.

Animal care and control staff are exposed to weather elements, animal-borne diseases, vicious animals and often deal with very emotionally charged situations. It takes dedication, patience, and hard work to be successful in the Animal Care and Control field.

Washoe County community members are encouraged to say thank you to WCRAS personnel for the services that they provide to our community and check out this video highlighting just a few of those people.
