Logo for America250 NevadaJuly 4, 2026, marks the Nation’s semi quincentennial – or 250th anniversary – of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Organizations and communities around the country are celebrating America250, and Washoe County will join the statewide efforts beginning in January.

The Washoe County Courthouse Historical and Preservation Society will kick off the celebrations with a special commemoration each month of the year.

Beginning in January, the timeless columned entrance to the Court will be open one day each month. Shortly after 8 a.m., Court will hold a Moment of Honor led by a local champion of democracy who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and present a local musical artist to perform a patriotic song. The champion will also be given the opportunity to lead a presentation on a selected historical figure – who may make a special appearance – significant to America’s 250 years of nationhood.

The Honorable Judge Barry Breslow of the Second Judicial District Court will welcome the first event on January 14. The scheduled champions and dates are:

  • January 14: Washoe County Board of County Commissioners
  • February 4: National Judicial College
  • March 4: Washoe County Alternate Public Defender Kate Hickman
  • April 1: Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam
  • May 6: City of Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson
  • June 3: TBD
  • July 8: Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks
  • August 5: City of Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve
  • September 9: University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval
  • October 7: Washoe County Public Defender Evelyn Grosenick
  • November 4: Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance
  • December 2: TBD

Each ceremony begins after Court opens at 8 a.m. on the front steps of the Washoe County Historic Courthouse, weather permitting, or on the second-floor rotunda. The public is welcome to join the celebration, and the ceremonial Courtroom, Department 15, will also be open for tours from 8-9 a.m. To learn more, please contact SJDC Executive Administrative Assistant Gina Greco at 775-328-3194.
