Washoe County Community Services Department storm update

by | Dec 31, 2022

Washoe County Community Services Department (CSD) has been conducting ongoing checks of areas prone to flooding and reports minimal impact from the series of storms so far. However, road conditions can change quickly and black ice may develop overnight. Please use caution if you must venture out during this storm.

About half of the CSD on-call crew was called in this morning to manage water on the roadway at Sierra Manor and Monte Vista. With the rain turning to snow at higher elevations, crews are switching to plowing as needed. Additionally, Incline Village received 3-5 inches of snow early this morning and there is a full crew plowing in the north Lake Tahoe area.

“Snow decreases the immediate threat of flooding,” CSD Operations Division Director Eric Crump said. “Crews will be switching from flood control to snow removal as needed.”

CSD Utility crews are monitoring the Lemmon Valley wastewater treatment plan and report no issues of flooding.

The Regional Emergency Operations Center (REOC) was activated on Friday, Dec. 30, at a level 1, which is considered a “monitoring stage.” The REOC is watching weather reports, anticipated impacts, areas of concern, and river and stream levels. The cities of Reno and Sparks are working to notify those who may be living outdoors near the river and move them to the Nevada Cares Campus. Residents can check the availability of beds at the shelter here, and a day use area is open.

Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County have established sandbag locations. CSD has staged equipment in Washoe Valley, Toll Road, North Valleys, Silver Knolls, Lemmon Valley, Highland Ranch, and Longley Lane. Roads crews are on standby throughout the holiday weekend, and staff will be monitoring phone calls for service.

Residents can call to report a problem area at 775-328-2180 or submit a work request online
