The Washoe County Clerk’s Office today issued its 2 millionth marriage license. The couple, Sean Dinnell and Alexa Honiotes, were surprised with balloons and a generous getaway package from community partner the Peppermill Resort Casino.

“This is a big milestone for our Marriage License Division,” County Clerk Janis Galassini said. “A marriage license is the first step toward the altar, and we have walked with 2 million couples on their journey together. It’s a reason to celebrate and to recognize the work of our team here at Washoe County.”

The Clerk’s Office has been issuing marriage licenses since 1871, and because of Reno’s early fame for quickie divorces and marriages, Washoe County has seen its share of notable names enter the Clerk’s Office, including actors Anthony Edwards, Tom Selleck, Jeffrey Tambor, Kathy Coleman, and Janet Leigh. Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee received his marriage license in Washoe County, as did singer LaToya Jackson, NFL athlete Deion Sanders, and even Theodor Seuss Geisel I, better known as Dr. Seuss.

The 2 millionth couple today received a romantic getaway donated by the Peppermill, including a two-night stay in the Tuscany Tower, and a gift card. The Peppermill is a popular wedding and honeymoon venue, and joins the Clerk’s Office in celebrating this milestone.

The Clerk’s Office issues marriage licenses every day of the year. Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the office closes at 4 p.m. on holidays. The fee for a marriage license is $85, and licenses may be obtained up to a year before the marriage ceremony. License appointments can be booked online here
