Reno, Nev. July 11, 2017. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting.
1. Approval to change county code allowing temporary business licenses for recreational marijuana. Commissioners approved a proposed ordinance change in Washoe County code to allow for temporary business licenses for recreational marijuana in unincorporated Washoe County to begin selling by August 4, 2017. These changes ensure compliance with state regulations initiated on June 13, 2017. According to the State of Nevada Department of Taxation, existing businesses with medical marijuana licenses that are in good standing are eligible to apply for recreational marijuana business licenses.
“As the Chair of the Washoe County marijuana working group dedicated to this issue, I am proud of the progress we’ve made to implement local ordinances that reflect the state’s direction on recreational marijuana,” says Commissioner Kitty Jung. “The board has approved these changes that are timely and responsive to the state requirements. Over the next year we will continue to work collaboratively with all of our local partners on this initiative.”
Washoe County has been working to create code changes for approval to meet these requirements. After today’s initial approval, code changes will go before the Board of County Commissioners for a second, and final, reading on July 25, 2017. Pending approval of the July 25 reading, the new code changes will be adopted, allowing three existing businesses and one cultivation facility to sell recreational marijuana beginning August 4, 2017.
2. Commissioners direct their Special District Funds. The Board of County Commissioners have approved Special District Funds disbursement for Commissioner Vaughn Hartung in the amount of $1,000 grant to benefit The Nevada Discovery Museum.
Special District Funds from Commissioner Jung were also approved for disbursement in the amount of $12,500 to benefit the following grants: The Generator to light up The Space Whale in downtown Reno for one year, as well as supporting Washoe County employee participation in Truckee Meadows Parks Challenge.
