The following are highlights from today’s Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:

1. Registrar of Voters presents overview of upcoming elections: The midterm Primary Election is just over three months away, and the Registrar of Voters Office is staffing up and working to enact the changes made to the election process during the 2021 Legislative Session. Registrar of Voters Deanna Spikula presented these legislative changes to the Board today, including the issuance of mail-in ballots to all active registered voters unless they opt out. Voters can still vote in person if they prefer, but all active voters will receive a mail-in ballot automatically unless they opt out. The opt-out forms are available in English and Spanish.

Spikula explained the levels of government oversight, and the federal laws that are replicated in Nevada law, including same-day registration, automatic voter registration through the Department of Motor Vehicles, order that candidates appear on the ballot, size of election precincts, and more.

The presentation included the local offices up for election, and in which jurisdiction they fall. Spikula also presented a timeline of important dates:

April 15: Deadline to opt out of mail-in ballots

May 28-June 10: Early Voting for Primary Election

June 14: Primary Election Day

June 24: Canvass of the Vote

Oct. 22-Nov. 4: Early Voting for General Election

Nov. 8: General Election Day

Nov. 18: Canvass of the Vote

2. Board approves contract to provide temporary site services at Nevada Cares Campus: Washoe County Housing & Homeless Services collected quotes to provide temporary site services at the Nevada Cares Campus, including temporary fencing, portable restrooms, portable handwashing stations, portable office buildings, portable storage containers and other items as needed for the Nevada Cares Campus. These items are needed as the Nevada Cares Campus continues to undergo transformation to enhance the long-term facilities to accommodate the health and safety needs of participants and staff.

Washoe County received four quotes and determined that Rapid Space DBA Quick Space was the most qualified vendor to provide the services at the lowest cost. The Board today approved the contract for an initial 16-month term not to exceed $475,000, with the option to renew for three one-year periods for up to $400,000 per year.

3. Chair Hartung allocates District Special Fund to support Spanish Springs High School JROTC: The Board approved a $5,000 allocation from Chair Vaughn Hartung’s District Special Fund to support the Spanish Springs High School JROTC Cougars Battalion. The Spanish Springs High School Army JROTC completes an annual service project to support underprivileged families during the Christmas holiday, and will travel to Anaheim, California, for a Drill Team cadet competition in the spring of 2022.

“I want to point out Chair Hartung’s donation to the Spanish Springs High School JROTC,” Commissioner Alexis Hill said. “Thank you for that donation.”
