The South Valleys Regional Park Master Plan provides a blueprint for development through a combination of public and private funding while preserving the park’s rich history and amenities. The following provides additional details on the Master Plan expansion.
South Valleys Regional Park in South Reno spans 104 acres and features sports fields, playgrounds and open spaces. Guided by an updated master plan, recent funding, including $2 million in ARPA funds and a $3.5 million Pennington Foundation grant, supports its phased expansion.
Located near Wedge Parkway and South Virginia Street, just west of Interstate 580, the park is made up of three parcels of land. Amenities include five baseball fields, two large flat fields, a concession building with restrooms, playgrounds, turf areas, a park maintenance facility, and group picnic areas.
The original South Valleys Regional Park Master Plan was prepared by CFA, Inc. and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in 1993, based on public input. Initially covering approximately 82 acres, it was updated in 2000 after voter approval of the WC-1 Regional Parks, Trails, Open Space and Libraries Bond, which supported the addition of the South Valleys Library. In 2009, Dr. Dorostkar donated an additional 22.8-acre parcel on the north end of the property. This native open space, featuring a riparian corridor, was not part of the original master plan but was integrated in a 2016 update that reflected the community’s vision for the park.
In July 2023, the Board of County Commissioners allocated $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds through the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund for the park’s expansion. In March 2024, the board approved an agreement with DOWL Engineering to design and provide engineering services for the development of approximately 35 acres. The total estimated cost of the expansion is $18 million, with construction planned in phases as funding becomes available. Proposed new features include three flat fields, four baseball/softball fields, a dog park, a playground, concessions with restrooms, parking and supporting infrastructure.
The County began soliciting bids for the first phase of the expansion in September 2024. This phase will include grading, paving, drainage, and installation of storm, sewer and irrigation lines, as well as lighting, electrical equipment, and landscaping with irrigation controls. The Board of County Commissioners will consider awarding the bid for approximately $2.5 million during their Dec. 10, 2024, meeting.
On Nov. 19, 2024, the Board of County Commissioners accepted a $3.5 million grant from the William N. Pennington Foundation to fund Phase 2a of the expansion. This phase will include two baseball/softball fields and a concession building with restrooms. Final designs for this phase are underway, led by DOWL Engineering.
