(Carson City, NV; October 4, 2018) – As we approach the 2018 general election, Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske again reminds registered voters and individuals not registered to vote that they may be contacted by non-governmental organizations about their voter registration status. Nevadans are advised that the information provided by these organizations does not necessarily reflect their official and current voter registration status.
The Secretary of State’s office is aware of at least one organization that is sending blank voter registration applications in the mail to individuals the organization claims “may not be registered to vote” based on public records. We are also aware of an organization that is sending text messages from various phone numbers with a 702 prefix informing individuals that “public records indicate you’re not registered to vote.”
Anyone who receives voter registration status information that does not appear to be accurate is encouraged to verify their voter information using the Secretary of State’s MyVoterFile verification tool at https://nvsos.gov/votersearch. MyVoterFile allows Nevada voters to check their registration status and political party affiliation, as well as find important information about upcoming elections, including polling locations and electronic sample ballots. Anyone who is concerned that the information they receive from third-party voter outreach organizations may be inaccurate is encouraged to check their voter registration status online before contacting their local election official or the Secretary of State’s office.
Secretary Cegavske also reminds Nevadans that all official election mail from the Secretary of State’s office or local election officials will contain the following logo:
Although mail from non-governmental voter participation organizations may appear to be official correspondence from state or local election officials, Nevadans are encouraged to read the entire mail piece, including the fine print, to determine the identity of the sender. State law requires a non-governmental entity that sends a notice to a person indicating the person is not or may not be registered to vote or requesting the person to register to vote to indicate on the notice that it is not official elections mail from the Secretary of State or a county or city clerk.
Nevadans should also be aware of voter registration scams designed to solicit personal information. Election officials in at least two other states have confirmed that residents in those states have received calls offering to register the individual to vote over the phone. This information has been shared with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Election Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EI-ISAC). Please be advised that voter registration over the phone is not a method by which a voter can register to vote.
