Elections 2024: Did you know?

by | May 25, 2024

1. It’s very likely you may receive more than one mail ballot.

Every time a voter initiates a change to their registration, such as an address change or party affiliation or a record change at the DMV, a new ballot is created and the previous ballot is invalidated so voters are not able to mistakenly vote more than one ballot. This is not a mistake, but an automated action to ensure that voters receive the correct ballot. You can destroy your previous ballot or bring it to the Registrar of Voters Office and we will dispose of it.

2. Just because you received a mail ballot, that does not mean you cannot vote in person.

Voters have the option to vote by mail, drop off your ballot at a Vote Center, or vote in person.

3. The sample ballot is available online.

The sample ballot is a tool to help voters know what races are in the election. You will receive a sample ballot in the mail and you can view a digital version online. Sample ballots are mailed separately from the mail ballot and may arrive before or after your official ballot arrives.

4. It’s up to all of us to keep the voter rolls clean.

If you move, be sure to contact our office so we can remove you from the voter rolls.

5. We cannot remove a voter just because you ask us to.

There are several steps that must be taken to remove a voter from the voter rolls. You may know that your neighbor moved, but unless they contact us or we can otherwise verify their move, we cannot remove them from our voter rolls.

6. You might receive a ballot for someone who does not live at your address.

If a previous resident at your address did not notify us of their move, they will still have a ballot sent to them. You can help us initiate the process of removing them by sending the ballot back to us. It’s up to all of us to keep the voter rolls clean.

7. The page of instructions with your ballot is your secrecy sleeve.

The ballot format in this election includes a page of instructions and your “I Voted” sticker. The instructions say that the page can be used as a secrecy sleeve. You are not required to use the secrecy sleeve, but if you would like to, put your ballot inside the folded paper and place both in the return envelope.

8. The presidential race is not supposed to be on the primary ballot.

Washoe County conducted a presidential preference primary in February. The Primary Election is for non-presidential offices.

9. It is not too late to register to vote.

You can update your registration or register to vote in person any polling place during Early Voting or on Election Day. Bring your identification card and proof of residency. If you haven’t voted in a recent election, you may be inactive, but you can reactivate your record by simply verifying your voter information.
