Deadline for Washoe County-funded fire-related hazardous waste removal Nov. 6

by | Oct 29, 2026

Washoe County is preparing to complete its Phase 1 Household Hazardous Waste Removal Support Program for properties impacted by the Hawk, Bug, and Stallion fires. The deadline to request County-funded services is November 6, 2026.

County staff reached out to more than 150 property owners who sustained damage from the recent wildfires and worked with EPA-qualified contractors to remove hazardous waste such as batteries, pesticides, propane tanks, fuels, paint, and other dangerous materials.

The expense to the county was approximately $350,000. Those who declined assistance from Washoe County will be responsible for hazardous waste removal before they are permitted to rebuild.

Properties that were remediated are now able to move to Phase 2, which involves the removal of debris and ash. Residents should contact CSD Building Program for questions about demolition permits and visit the EmergencyWashoe website for information on organizations and resources that may be available to assist with Phase 2 cleanup.
