Community funds TMT’s new data storytelling initiative

by | Feb 28, 2024

Truckee Meadows Tomorrow (TMT), with funding from Washoe County and SilverSummit Healthplan, have formed a public-private-social partnership to engage with the community in a more meaningful way by providing data visualizations, informatics, infographics, and narrative impact storytelling using TMT’s community data.

The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners recently approved a Community Support grant of $50,000, adding to the $75,000 granted by SilverSummit. These grants will fund the creation of a new data analyst position within TMT to shape its future data architecture, display data in a visually compelling manner, and extract insights to inform the community. This aligns with the Washoe County Community Reinvestment Division’s goal to support local community-based providers to support services that address diverse health and human needs in the community or contribute to economic development and quality of life issues.

There are three specific goals of this pilot initiative:

  1. Provide data visualizations and highlight trends using TMT’s current datasets to convey the community’s greatest needs;
  2. Maintain valid data on the community portal Nevada Tomorrow and develop an interdisciplinary Data Advisory Group (The DAG); and
  3. Build awareness of TMT’s community data and expand to a wider audience.

Importantly, data impact storytelling provides context, highlights trends, and makes data-driven insights more meaningful. It bridges the communication gap between technical and non-technical evaluators, and empowers them to make more informed, data-driven decisions.

“The vision for this work was inspired by the community and feedback from TMT stakeholders,” TMT Executive Director Kylie Rowe said. “When public, private, and nonprofit sectors come together around the same initiative, magic happens. I’m really looking forward to this upcoming year when we start pairing data visualizations with human-centric narratives.”

Truckee Meadows Tomorrow (TMT) provides comprehensive quality of life data in Washoe County through their Nevada Tomorrow data portal, biennial Community Progress Report, community data dashboards, presentations, and key community partnerships.

“At SilverSummit, we are thrilled to support this innovative and forward-thinking initiative,” Nicole King, SilverSummit’s vice president of community solutions, said. “Providing meaningful, accurate data is vital to fostering productive discussion and informed decision-making. We believe that this partnership with TMT and Washoe County will serve as a critical resource for the community, helping to highlight essential trends and needs that may have been overlooked. It’s about transforming information into knowledge that can influence positive community change, and we’re excited to be a part of that process.”

SilverSummit Healthplan awards grants through its Community Investment Program to improve the health of the community from housing to employment to childcare. The program prioritizes housing services such as sober living, rental assistance, and supportive housing; workforce training; financial literacy; nutrition education; youth recreation and prevention of at-risk behavior; and maternal and child health outcomes for Black and Hispanic women and babies, among many other quality-of-life services and programs.
