The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed September 2015 as Hunger Action Month. Hunger and poverty are of grave concern in the United States and in Washoe County. One in every four children in northern Nevada relies on food provided by the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Washoe County Commissioner Kitty Jung and staff from the Food Bank highlighted Hunger Action Month and encouraged community members to get involved with the many events taking place in September. Members of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada distributed more than 12.5 million pounds of food in 2013 through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations.
The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed October 2015 as Community Planning Month. Community planning provides citizens with the proper steps to manage and anticipate changes for the community, workplace and at home. The month of October is an opportunity to publicly recognize the participation and dedication of the members of all planning commissions, the county planning and development division and citizen planners.
