Washoe County is now accepting applications for its 2027 Washoe County Leadership Academy (WCLA) — a unique, six-month journey that cultivates leadership, builds meaningful connections, and offers an inside look at local government in action.
Hosted in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, WCLA is more than a leadership course — it’s a behind-the-scenes experience unlike any other in our region.
Once a month, participants will explore a different aspect of Washoe County government — from law enforcement and libraries to environmental conservation and rural outreach. Site visits include the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Visitors Center and Museum, the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, and even the unique community of Gerlach. Along the way, participants will discover how agencies and community partners are working together to serve residents across the county, and preserve our region’s rich heritage.
Participants will receive a CliftonStrengths assessment and coaching session with a Gallup-certified Strengths Coach to gain insight into their personal strengths and how they can leverage those strengths within the group.
Participation is free and limited to 25 Washoe County residents who are not currently employed by the County. Selection is based on demonstrated interest in leadership and local government, and the ability to commit to one full-day session per month from January to June 2027 — always on a Friday.
Applications are due by Oct. 9, 2026. The program kicks off on January 8, 2027, and concludes with a graduation ceremony on June 11, 2027, attended by Washoe County leadership.
