Industry Overview

The golf industry continues to benefit from sustained participation growth that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Golf emerged as a leading outdoor recreation option in 2020, and participation levels have remained strong in subsequent years. 

Annual Round Starts 

  • 2023: 52,495 
  • 2024: 53,748 
  • 2025: 57,273 

Participation remains consistent and reflects continued demand and stable utilization of the facility. 

Improvements (Recent & Planned) 

  • Public safety projects, including netting extension repair, replacement, and expansion 
  • Major bunker renovation project (2026–2027), including new drainage and sand 
  • Ongoing maintenance and removal of aging trees 
  • Continued irrigation system improvements (new heads, control boxes, and computer upgrades) 
  • Developed detailed turf maintenance plan resulting in significant improvement in playing conditions These investments support course sustainability, operational efficiency, and improved player experience. 

Tournaments, Leagues & Community Use 

  • High demand for Monday–Wednesday evening leagues, averaging 130–140 players per night 
  • Nine-hole leagues run 23 weeks during the summer season 
  • Strong league participation reinforces Washoe Golf Course’s role as a community gathering place and a consistent revenue source 
  • Ongoing partnerships with local businesses promote community engagement and economic support throughout the year 
  • Hosts a wide range of additional events, including men’s and women’s club play, charity tournaments, and events for local and out-of-town groups 

Youth, Education & Community Programming 

  • Offers in-house junior golf programming focused on youth development and access to the game 
  • Hosts First Tee programming, supporting youth character development and life skills through golf 
  • Serves as a host site for Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) golf classes, reaching a wider non-golfer audience. 
  • Home to Reno High School boys and girls teams. In addition to providing access to other local high school teams that don’t have a home facility. 

Disc Golf Course (Established 2020) 

  • Provides a low-cost, accessible recreational option and expands the course’s user base 
  • Continues to show steady participation and community support 

Overall Impact & Outlook 

Washoe Golf Course continues to deliver strong economic and recreational value to Washoe County through stable play levels, diverse programming, and responsible reinvestment in facilities. Management remains focused on long-term sustainability, including water-efficient practices and infrastructure upgrades, while maintaining the course’s historical significance and its role as a year-round community asset
