Top headlines from the Board of County Commissioners meeting

The following are highlights from today’s Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:    

1. Board approves donations to Animal Services: The Board approved cash donations from numerous donors as well as donations of food, goods, and vaccines to Washoe County Regional Animal Services: 

  • $3,690 in monetary donations; 
  • Food and treats valued at approximately $1,355 from the SPCA;  
  • Food and goods valued at approximately $2,663 and 600 vaccines valued at $2,457 from Petco Love. 

2. Board approves distribution of ARPA grants to area nonprofits: The Board approved an allocation of $100,000 to the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada to help organizations identify strengths, gaps, and priority capacity needs, and to provide technical assistance, systems-building customized consulting, and one-on-one coaching to 20-25 Washoe County participating nonprofits. The Board also approved a $55,000 grant to AHA Projects to support a nonprofit resource center. The 16,000-square-foot building will provide Northern Nevada’s nonprofits access to shared space through offices, conference rooms, and event space. 

The grants are part of Washoe County’s ARPA funds through the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund that were unused for their previously intended purposes and de-obligated by the Board. 

3. Board accepts FY26 Adoption Savings grant: The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services awarded the Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) a $607,000 grant to provide supportive services to facilitate and maintain the successful adoption of children from the Washoe County Child Welfare System. The Adoption Savings Program supports children in the child welfare system as well as prospective adoptive parents, ensuring they have the necessary resources through the adoption process. It also provides post-adoption services to the families.
