Washoe County is now accepting applications for its 2025–26 Washoe County Leadership Academy (WCLA) — a unique, nine-month journey that cultivates leadership, builds meaningful connections, and offers an inside look at local government in action.
Hosted in partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, WCLA is more than a leadership course — it’s a behind-the-scenes experience unlike any other in our region.
Once a month, participants will explore a different aspect of Washoe County government — from law enforcement and libraries to environmental conservation and rural outreach. Site visits include the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, the historic Bowers Mansion, Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Visitors Center and Museum, the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, and even the unique community of Gerlach. Along the way, participants will discover how agencies and community partners are working together to protect Lake Tahoe, serve residents across the county, and preserve our region’s rich heritage.
In addition to hands-on learning, each cohort will work collaboratively on a community impact project, applying their new skills to make a tangible difference while expanding their personal and professional networks.
Participation is free and limited to 25 Washoe County residents who are not currently employed by the County. Selection is based on demonstrated interest in leadership and local government, and the ability to commit to one full-day session per month — always on a Friday.
Applications are due by July 25, 2024. The program kicks off on September 12, 2025, and concludes with a graduation ceremony on May 15, 2026, attended by Washoe County leadership.
