The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office (WCRMEO) has positively identified a man who was found dead in November 1984 in Reno.
Robert Smithcamp, 46 at the time of his death, was identified through an innovative partnership between WCRMEO and Othram, Inc. Othram was able to perform forensic genetic genealogy by comparing Mr. Smithcamp’s DNA profile to profiles uploaded to consumer genealogical databases consented for law enforcement use. This analysis provided a lead to a family member who had taken an at-home genetic test. Upon contacting the family, the Medical Examiner’s Office and Othram were able to obtain a DNA specimen for comparison to the decedent, ultimately leading to a positive identification. Othram’s forensic genetic genealogy services cost several thousand dollars and were made possible through a combination of funding from the Medical Examiner’s Office, private donors, and NamUs.
Mr. Smithcamp’s body was discovered in Reno on November 18, 1984 by a hunter. The remains were transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office where an examination was performed by a county forensic pathologist. The cause and manner of death could not be determined due to the severe skeletonization of the remains. Mr. Smithcamp’s next of kin has been notified and is now able to claim his remains.
“This is the fourth unidentified person from a cold case that we have been able to identify due to this partnership and the generosity of members of the public,” Washoe County Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner Dr. Laura D. Knight said. “We are thankful to be able to identify Mr. Smithcamp and give his family closure after nearly 40 years.”
