Washoe County announces FUSE Executive Fellowship to boost affordable housing development

by | Aug 30, 2023

Washoe County, in partnership with FUSE, has announced an exciting opportunity for professionals to join a year-long fellowship to advance affordable housing and support sustainable, equitable, and resilient communities. As part of this initiative, a FUSE Executive Fellow will be engaged to help design and implement crucial policy changes in the housing sector.

Addressing a Pressing Need:

Washoe County is grappling with an affordability crisis that has seen its residents relocating or compromising on basic needs. This not only affects the overall well-being of its citizens but also compounds environmental and economic issues. As the National Assoc. of Home Builders and Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index reveals, the Reno/Sparks area ranks alarmingly low in housing affordability. The county’s initiative to modify development codes, policies, and procedures presents a beacon of hope in addressing these challenges head-on.

A Unique Fellowship Opportunity:

The FUSE Executive Fellowship, running from October 23, 2023, to October 21, 2024, is a distinctive program that places seasoned professionals in local government agencies to lead transformative projects. FUSE, a national nonprofit, has been at the forefront of driving change, especially in areas affected by historical systemic racism. Their collaboration with Washoe County ensures that their combined strengths are leveraged to address the affordable housing shortage effectively.

What the Fellowship Entails:

The selected FUSE Executive Fellow will work intensively with various stakeholders, from county agencies to private developers. The Fellow will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape, engage in dialogue with key players, draft necessary policy changes, and assist in rolling out these reforms. This is a paid fellowship; salary is $80,000 plus benefits.

Who Should Apply?

Ideal candidates for the fellowship will have at least 15 years of professional experience, a strong background in affordable housing development, policy design, and a passion for community engagement. Their expertise will be vital in navigating the challenges and intricacies of housing development in Washoe County.

Join Us in Building a Resilient Washoe County:

Interested professionals with the requisite experience and a desire to make a difference are encouraged to apply. This is a chance to be at the forefront of a transformative movement that not only addresses housing needs but also paves the way for a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient Washoe County.
