Practicing the ABCD’S of Infant Safe Sleep Saves Lives

Reno, Nev. Oct. 5, 2026. Unsafe sleep practices have become one of the leading causes of death among otherwise healthy infants under the age of one in Washoe County. From Fiscal Years 2023-2026, 13 infants in Washoe County died in unsafe sleep situations.

October is Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month and the Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) is raising awareness by reiterating the A-B-C-D method, meaning a baby should always be put to sleep by placing it Alone, on its Back, in a Crib, and Don’t Smoke.

Studies show most infant safe sleep deaths can be prevented if those caring for an infant practice the following:

  • Always place babies alone, on their backs, in a safe sleep space to prevent suffocation or entrapment.
  • Use a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and fitted sheet.
  • Keep the sleep area clear of toys, pillows, blankets, and other items.
  • Keep babies away from tobacco and secondhand smoke, which increases the risk of SUIDS and other health complications.
  • No co-sleeping. Adult beds, couches, armchairs, and pillows can increase the risk of suffocation.

Health officials recommend sleep sacks as a wonderful alternative to blankets, and babies don’t need stuffed animals, crib bumper pads or anything else in the crib to sleep.

“Infant safe sleep practices save lives,” said Washoe County Human Services Agency Director Pamela Mann. “We must ensure our youngest and smallest of humans are safe when sleeping. Far too often, we are seeing preventable tragedies in our community. If you care for a baby, please know how best to put a baby down for rest.”

HSA is dedicated to raising awareness and supporting children and families in Washoe County. By sharing the ABCD’s of safe sleep and promoting safe sleep practices, we can work together as a community to give every baby the safest start in life.
