43 Puppies, One Common Enemy: Parvo

In 2023 Animal Services saw an alarming rise in Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) cases, with 43 sweet puppies (double the number we saw 5 years ago) brought to the shelter who were fighting this deadly and highly contagious virus.
Vaccination is the best defense against Parvo, and timing is crucial. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Parvo can survive in the soil for up to a year and can be  easily tracked into your home on your shoes!
Vaccination is quick and easy, check out our list of local vaccination resources to help protect your pet today! Washoe County Pet Vaccination Resources

Happy Tail:

Drainage to Delight: Havasu’s Happy Ending

Remember the skittish little pup who was living in a drainage pipe for many weeks and was finally rescued thanks to the collaborative effort between Animal Services and the City of Reno Facilities and Maintenance team?
Well, after an extensive foster stay through Nevada Humane Society where he learned to trust, love, and play, this pup (now named Havasu) has found his forever home and we couldn’t be happier for him!
His adoption was a special moment for all involved that highlighted how team work makes the dream work!

Kudos Corner – Lost pet glow up!

Pets arrive at Animal Services in a variety of conditions. In one case, this pup came in with severely matted fur and visible open sores. When pets develop mats they often pull at the skin and cause discomfort. The tangled hair can also trap things, like foxtails, that can irritate the skin and cause sores. To help this pup be more comfortable, our amazing Caretaker, Nate, took the time to give this pup a much needed hair trim, bath, and finally a warm sweater! Animal Services sees thousands of animals come through our shelter every year and we are proud to have such caring staff who work to ensure every animal is as comfortable as possible.

See you next quarter with more news and updates!
