Combat summer boredom and embark on a journey of creativity with Washoe County Library and the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge! From Sunday, June 1, through Thursday, July 31, patrons of all ages can log their reading, participate in fun activities, attend library events, and even earn free books.
Kids and teens 18 and under can earn three free books by reading and completing activities. Funding for youth book prizes generously provided by the Friends of Washoe County Library nonprofit. Adults ages 19 years and older can earn up to three free items from library book sales by reading and completing activities and will receive a voucher for each free item.
Vouchers can also be redeemed for up to $3 off one item at the Friends of Washoe County Library book sales on May 31–June 8, and August 2–10. For more information about their book sales, visit the Friends of Washoe County Library website. Book sale vouchers cannot be replaced or redeemed for cash and must be redeemed by August 31, 2025. Limit of three vouchers per participant.
The theme of this year’s challenge, “Color Our World,” is designed to inspire readers to get creative and engage with a variety of artistic expressions. Visit a library to discover a new book, catch a play or musical performance, participate in arts and crafts programs, or peruse a gallery exhibit.
The program aims to keep patrons engaged throughout the summer by offering an array of learning opportunities and interactive activities. Summer reading helps students build language skills, reading comprehension, and memory skills. It increases self-esteem and confidence, and readers of all ages get an opportunity to explore new interests.
Most Washoe County Library branches will host Summer Reading Challenge kickoff parties between June 3 and 9. These events will feature games and activities along with an opportunity to sign up and learn more about the challenge. On Saturday, June 7, the Incline Village Library will celebrate 20 years in its current location with a Block Party and Summer Reading Challenge Kickoff. Patrons are invited to enjoy a free hot dog, play a game or two of cornhole, and enjoy many other fun activities at this outdoor community event. For more information about our kickoff parties, visit washoelibrary.org/readingparty.
To participate, patrons need to download the Beanstack app or visit a library for a reading log. Readers will receive Beanstack prize notifications or submit completed logs to any Washoe County Library location to receive prizes by August 31.
