Washoe County Library launches 2024 Summer Reading Challenge

by | May 30, 2024

Summer is a great time to discover—or rediscover—the joys of reading. Washoe County Library is pleased to present the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, which gives readers of all ages an opportunity to take their passion for the written word to the next level. From Saturday, June 1, through Wednesday, July 31, Washoe County Library patrons can log their reading, celebrate their favorite authors, meet other book lovers, and even earn free books.

The theme of this year’s challenge, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” evokes the feeling of discovery and excitement that accompanies a summer afternoon spent exploring a tall stack of fresh library books.

The program aims to keep children, families, and readers of all stripes engaged throughout the summer by offering an array of learning opportunities and interactive activities. Summer reading helps students build language skills, reading comprehension, and memory skills. It increases self-esteem and confidence, and readers of all ages get an opportunity to explore new interests or old stories.

Most Washoe County Library branches will host Summer Reading Challenge kickoff parties between May 31 and June 9. These events will feature family-friendly games, crafts, and activities. The North Valleys Library will host a Summer Reading Challenge StoryWalk, and several branches will host wrap-up parties between Saturday, July 27 and Friday, August 2.

Patrons can download the Beanstack app to create an account and collect badges by engaging in reading challenges and fun activities. Paper reading logs are also available online and at any Washoe County Library location. Readers will receive Beanstack prize notifications or submit completed logs to any Washoe County Library location to receive prizes by August 31.
