Celebrate National Library Week April 7-13, 2024

by | Apr 5, 2024

Ready, set, library! National Library Week is April 7–13, 2024, and Washoe County Library encourages everyone in the community to explore all the library has to offer.

Libraries give us a green light to experience something special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue our passions. Washoe County Library offers a wide array of programs, classes, and events, including Story Time, Pioneer Center Youth Programs, Book a Librarian, makerspace sessions, and computer and smartphone classes. Library patrons also enjoy free access to print and digital materials, online databases, Wi-Fi, and computers.

The library system plays a pivotal role in bringing library resources to communities in need. Homebound services, Library to Go book kiosks, and the new Library on the Go bookmobile help expand library services to local community centers, homebound patrons, schools, and outreach events.

Washoe County Library has served the public since 1904,” said Library Director Jeff Scott. “I’m proud to lead this organization as we expand services from bookmobiles and book kiosks, to ebooks and digital downloads. There is so much for you available at your local library!”

Sponsored by the American Library Association, National Library Week was first celebrated in 1958 and is now observed each April by libraries of all types across the country.

Days of note during this week are:

Monday, April 8: Right to Read Day is a national day of action in support of the right to read. The State of America’s Libraries Report is released, including the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2023.

Tuesday, April 9: National Library Workers Day is a day for everyone to recognize the valuable contributions made by library workers.

Wednesday, April 10: National Library Outreach Day is dedicated to library professionals who are meeting their patrons where they are.

Thursday, April 11: Take Action for Libraries Day is a day for all library advocates to affirm their participation in 2024 elections.
