Cares Campus winter overflow beds close for the season

Washoe County’s Housing and Homeless Services (HHS) Division closed its winter overflow beds Tuesday, following a phased shutdown that began on April 7. While these seasonal beds are closed, the Nevada Cares Campus Resource Center remains open 24/7 until May 1 as a warming center. After this date, the center will continue serving unhoused individuals without a designated bed at the Nevada Cares Campus or Our Place. The Resource Center provides essential day use services such as laundry, showers, restrooms, meals, and case management. It will be open 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.

Washoe County released the results of the January 25, 2024, Point in Time (PIT) count, showing a slight increase in the single-day count while comparative reports show an overall decrease in homelessness over time. The PIT Count is an annual, in-person count of the number of people experiencing homelessness in Washoe County and is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Washoe County Communications Division premieres documentary on the state of homelessness in Washoe County, launches discussions for future of services for the vulnerable

As Washoe County nears the three-year mark of having assumed lead responsibility for homeless programs in the region, the Washoe County Communications Division has released a documentary of first-person accounts titled “Home: Rebuilding Hope for Washoe’s Homeless.” The documentary premiered April 10 at The_Theater to an audience of participants, service providers, elected officials, government staff, and business owners and residents who have a stake in helping the homeless community. The premiere was followed by a robust forward-looking discussion of available services and those that are lacking in Washoe County.

Washoe County releases results of annual point-in-time count

Washoe County today released the results of the January 26, 2023, Point in Time (PIT) Count. The PIT Count is an annual, in-person count of the number of people experiencing homelessness in Washoe County. Conducted each year, the PIT Count provides a detailed one-day “snapshot” of the size and demographics of sheltered and unsheltered homeless populations in communities across the nation. The count is conducted according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidance and begins at 4 a.m. on the day of the count.
