In recognition of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, the Washoe County Registrar of Voters is encouraging residents to serve as poll workers for the upcoming November general election.
Today, Aug. 11, is National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, a nationwide initiative established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to highlight the important role poll workers play in administering elections and encourage Americans to serve their communities. This year’s observance comes as Washoe County prepares for early voting from Oct. 17-30 and Election Day on Nov. 3.
“Poll workers are on the front lines of ensuring every eligible voter can cast their vote,” Registrar of Voters Andrew McDonald said. “Whether someone has worked elections for years or is looking to participate for the first time, this is an opportunity to be part of the process, help your community and get a firsthand look at how elections are administered.”
The Registrar of Voters is recruiting for a variety of positions at vote centers, with a particular need for bilingual poll workers and applicants with previous poll worker or election experience. Washoe County also offers high school students the opportunity to serve as poll workers beginning at age 16. To qualify, students must be U.S. citizens and Washoe County residents, be at least 16 by training day, and receive permission from both a parent or guardian and their school. Student election workers receive training, work alongside other poll workers in carrying out vote center duties and are paid for their service.
Poll workers are compensated based on their assigned position. Early voting positions range from $16 to $18 per hour, while Election Day workers receive between $175 and $225. Workers also receive $35 for required training and an additional $25 for Election Eve setup.
