Food Scrap Drop Off at Riverside Farmer’s Market
Community members now have a simple, impactful way to reduce waste and support sustainability with the launch of a new food scrap drop-off booth during the Riverside Farmers Market at Idlewild Park. The initiative invites residents to bring their food scraps each Sunday from 9am-1pm and participate in a growing effort to divert organic waste from landfills.
The booth will be open during regular market hours and is designed to make composting accessible to everyone—including those who may not have the space or resources to compost at home. Accepted materials include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and other compostable food waste.
“Food waste makes up a large portion of what we send to landfills,” said Brian Beffort, Washoe County Sustainability Manager “By providing a convenient drop-off location, we’re giving the community a hands-on way to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable local system.”
Collected food scraps will be transported to a local composting facility, where they will be processed into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to support local agriculture and landscaping. Residents are encouraged to bring their food scraps in reusable containers and join the movement toward a cleaner, greener community.
