Washoe County Senior Center Reopening

by | May 12, 2025

Reno, Nev. May 13, 2025. The Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) is excited to announce the official reopening of the Washoe County Senior Center with a ribbon-cutting and tour of the new and improved facility on Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m.

The nearly $2.8 million remodel of the Washoe County Reno Senior Center boasts several, beautiful upgrades, which include new lighting, flooring, kitchen, dining room as well as a remodeled library, restrooms and several other extraordinary improvements.

In addition, HSA is excited to unveil a new, state-of-the-art, healthcare option to local seniors and the broader community. HSA is partnering with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada Medicaid and OnMed to welcome a tech-enabled, care delivery system that will provide hybrid care to Washoe County. The OnMed CareStation is an indoor structure, described as a “clinic-in-a-box,” offering individuals the opportunity to have real-time consultations with a licensed clinician, via high-definition audio-video capabilities and a comprehensive suite of medical devices.

“OnMed is thrilled to partner with the exceptional leadership of Washoe County and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada Medicaid to introduce Nevada’s first publicly available OnMed CareStation,” said OnMed CEO Karthik Ganesh. “Together, we commit to providing underserved communities access to healthcare, anywhere.”

The interior of the OnMed CareStation resembles a small doctor’s office. Patients are instantly connected with a welcoming care coordinator, who walks through a quick intake process and then connects the patient with an OnMed clinician for a live, virtual visit. The CareStation is equipped with medical-grade diagnostic tools, providing the clinician with an accurate, real-time view of all vital signs. The CareStation also features high-definition, thermal imaging cameras to better examine the patient’s skin, eyes, ears and throat to diagnose infection and other possible conditions. Care will be provided in a private, hygienic environment that is disinfected after each visit.

An OnMed CareStation provider can offer Washoe County seniors the following within minutes:

  • Diagnose physical health conditions.
  • Treatment plan and recommended medications.
  • Specialist referrals.
  • Screening for mental health concerns.
  • E-prescriptions (sent directly to preferred pharmacy).

The OnMed CareStation is possible, thanks to a $400,000 donation from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Nevada Medicaid in Nevada.

“Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Nevada Medicaid is thrilled to partner with HSA and OnMed to provide our Washoe County senior community with expanded access to the latest innovative, high-quality healthcare options. This partnership represents our steadfast commitment to expanding access to healthcare and positively impacting the whole health of those we serve,” said Joy Thomas, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Nevada Medicaid Health Plan.

A second unit will be coming to the Nevada Cares Campus Resource Center later this summer.

The Home Means Nevada Art Exhibit will also be prominently displayed at the Washoe County Senior Center over the next several weeks, including at this year’s OAM Info Fair, courtesy of the Nevada Arts Council. Home Means Nevada, themed around Nevada’s state song of the same title, is a photography exhibit that echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon. Nevada is a place of inspiration for the photographers who find beauty in her rugged geology and starry skies. This show features 15 photographers and highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area.
