Jan. 5, 2021 – The Second Judicial District court is saddened to report that early Tuesday morning, Judge Steve Elliott passed away after a short battle with cancer. He was 72 years old.

“Judge Elliott was a leader in the Northern Nevada legal community,” Chief Judge Scott Freeman said. “He was a wonderful Sparks city attorney, judge, and man who had tremendous wisdom. He will be greatly missed.”

Elliott started his career at the City of Sparks as the city prosecutor in 1977.  In 1979, he was elected Sparks city attorney and served in that role until 1996 when he was elected to Department 10 of the Second Judicial District Court, where he served until March 2013.

The family released the following statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the Honorable Steve Elliott aka “The Judge,” as he was known to many. In addition to his legal career, public service, being a friend and advocate for Nevada, the judge was an amazing husband, father and grandfather with countless friends, who will be sorely missed. The judge loved and lived life and we will cherish and remember all those memories.”

Washoe County Commission Chair Bob Lucey made a statement on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners: “We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Judge Steven Elliott, who we learned today passed away. Judge Elliott was elected to the Second Judicial District Court in 1996, where he served until March of 2013.  Judge Elliott also continued to serve as a senior judge for the Second Judicial Court. Prior to that service, Judge Elliott was the Sparks City Attorney, and was a respected public servant to northern Nevada. On a personal note, Judge Elliott officiated my wedding, and was a mentor and close friend to the Lucey family. We are devastated at this loss for our community.”

The Elliott family says additional details will be forthcoming, and in lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation to Judge Elliott’s preferred non-profits:
