The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will be joining forces with participating law enforcement agencies in Nevada for a Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign. The campaign will take place from now through October 31st.
With Halloween just around the corner, streets will soon be filled with little ghosts, princesses, and superheroes out trick-or-treating, making pedestrian safety more important than ever. In 2024, Nevada saw 113 pedestrian fatalities, a sobering reminder that staying alert can save lives. This campaign aims to educate both pedestrians and drivers through coordinated, highly visible patrols statewide to help ensure everyone makes it home safely.
Pedestrian reminders:
- Walk on sidewalks whenever possible or as far to the side of the road as possible.
- Cross at crosswalks or intersections.
- Between dusk and dawn, wear bright clothing or accessories that can be seen at night.
- Don’t be distracted by your phone, keep your eyes on the road.
Motorist reminders:
- Put the phone down and watch out for pedestrians.
- Driving a few miles over the speed limit might not feel like a big deal, but in a collision with a pedestrian, it can be the difference between life and death.
- Make eye contact with pedestrians waiting to cross the street.
- Take extra care while driving around schools, playgrounds and neighborhoods
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to reaching Zero Fatalities in Washoe County and on Nevada’s roadways by increasing awareness around speeding, distractions, impairment, unrestrained driving, and more.
