WCSO Alerts Residents to Increase in Thefts from Unsecured, Standalone Mailboxes

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a recent increase in thefts from unsecured, standalone mailboxes in our area. The Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of individuals placing outgoing checks in their mailboxes, only for thieves to remove the checks and alter or deposit them for their own gain.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents to use secure USPS drop boxes or take outgoing mail directly to the post office – especially when sending checks or sensitive items. Residents should also collect incoming mail promptly and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Let’s work together to reduce victimization in our community.
