WCSO Aids in Recovery of Two Victims of Saturday’s Lake Tahoe Storm

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) Search and Rescue Unit responded to a request for assistance from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office in the continued search for two missing victims after a boat capsized during a sudden storm on Lake Tahoe the previous day.

Members of the WCSO Hasty Team, Specialized Vehicle Unit, and Marine 9 and 10 crews deployed, utilizing the team’s Outland 2000 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV is equipped with multiple cameras, lighting, onboard sonar, and an articulating arm with a grapple claw. The ROV is capable of diving to depths of 2,000 feet, making it ideal for deepwater search and recovery operations.

Utilizing this equipment and the expertise of team personnel, the first victim was located and recovered Sunday afternoon at a depth of over 300 feet. The second victim was found and recovered Monday at a similar depth.

“This mission was both technically complex and emotionally difficult,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “Our team demonstrated extraordinary professionalism under heartbreaking circumstances. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by this tragedy and hope the recovery of these two victims brings some measure of peace to their loved ones.”
