If You See the Signs, Make the Call.
Following the May 19 press conference regarding the Izabella Loving case, Sheriff Darin Balaam emphasized the importance of protecting children in our community and speaking up when something does not seem right.
“Right now, there is a child in our community or in our nation who is being abused or neglected. I’m pleading with every parent, adult, and our society that we must commit to being active advocates for our children. If you see something, say something.” – Sheriff Balaam
Protecting children is a shared responsibility. Reporting suspected abuse or neglect can be the first step in helping a child receive protection, support, and intervention.
If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 immediately.
To file a report, contact your local law enforcement agency. To reach the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, call 775-328-3001.
You can also report suspected child abuse or neglect by contacting the Washoe County Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1 (833) 900-SAFE (7233).
The hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reports can be made confidentially and anonymously.
You do not need proof that abuse or neglect has occurred to make a report. A report is a request for investigation, and trained professionals will determine the appropriate next steps.
When making a report, provide as much information as possible, including:
• Child’s name, age, and address
• Parent or caregiver information
• Details regarding suspected abuse or neglect
• Any known safety concerns or prior incidents
