Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Reminds Moon Rocks Visitors to Recreate Responsibly During Memorial Day Weekend

The Moon Rocks OHV Area, located west of Winnemucca Ranch Road, remains a popular destination for OHV riding and camping. With large crowds expected over Memorial Day weekend, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is reminding visitors to recreate responsibly and help keep the area safe for everyone enjoying the holiday outdoors.

Over the years, the Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous calls for service involving OHV crashes, serious injuries, fatalities, and fireworks-related incidents in the area. The ultimate goal throughout the holiday weekend is safety, ensuring everyone can enjoy the outdoors responsibly and return home safely.

Deputies and BLM Rangers will be actively patrolling the area throughout the weekend and encourage visitors to make responsible decisions, follow safety regulations, and be respectful of other outdoor enthusiasts using the recreation area.

Before heading out, remember:

  • Never drive impaired.
  • Open containers are prohibited in vehicles and OHVs.
  • Fireworks are prohibited.
  • Use campfires responsibly and follow any active fire restrictions.
  • Shooting is prohibited in most areas.
  • Watch for OHV riders of all ages and abilities.
  • Ride within your ability level and watch for riders of all ages and experience levels.
  • Help keep Moon Rocks clean by packing out trash and debris.

As we gather with friends and family this weekend, we also pause to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Let’s all do our part to stay safe, look out for one another, and enjoy Memorial Day weekend responsibly.
