Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Reminds Burning Man Travelers to Drive Safely Through Gerlach

As tens of thousands of traveler’s head to Burning Man, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is reminding participants and visitors to keep safety and community respect top of mind, especially when passing through the gateway town to Black Rock City, Gerlach.

The Gerlach community experiences a dramatic increase in traffic during Burning Man. To ensure the safety of residents, eventgoers, and all who share the road, WCSO emphasizes the following reminders:

  • No Speeding: Drive with patience and care. Law enforcement presence will be increased to enforce safe speeds on all roadways leading to Gerlach.
  • No Texting While Driving or Handheld Phone Use: Nevada State Law prohibits texting while driving and handheld phone use while driving. Be aware and don’t text while driving.
  • Yield to School Buses: The school year is in session. Drivers are required by law to stop when school buses are picking up or dropping off students.
  • Respect Private Property: Do not park in driveways, roadways, or block access for residents and emergency vehicles.
  • Leave No Trace: Burning Man embraces a culture of responsibility. Please respect Nevada’s public lands by disposing of trash properly. For guidance, visit: Leave Nevada Beautiful.
  • Expect Heavy Traffic: Allow extra time, remain alert, and share the road responsibly.
  • Obey the Law: DUI, reckless driving, distracted driving and illegal activity will not be tolerated.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation of all who are traveling through the County and reminds drivers that safety begins with personal responsibility.
