Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Participates in Statewide Pedestrian Safety Campaign Ahead of Halloween

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement agencies across Nevada for a statewide Joining Forces Pedestrian Safety Campaign, taking place October 13 through October 31, 2026.

As Halloween approaches and more families prepare to head out for trick-or-treating, the campaign serves as an important reminder for both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert and make safety a priority. Throughout the campaign, deputies will conduct increased traffic enforcement efforts focused on pedestrian safety, driver awareness, and reducing dangerous behaviors that put lives at risk.

With shorter daylight hours and increased pedestrian activity during the Halloween season, the Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to take a few extra precautions to help prevent avoidable tragedies.

Pedestrian Safety Reminders:

  • Use sidewalks whenever available and cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially during evening hours.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions, including cell phones, while walking.
  • Never assume a driver sees you. Make sure vehicles have stopped before crossing.

Motorist Safety Reminders:

  • Slow down and remain especially alert in residential neighborhoods and areas with increased pedestrian traffic.
  • Eliminate distractions and keep your attention on the road.
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.
  • Use extra caution during evening hours when visibility is reduced and children may be trick-or-treating.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to reducing the number of fatalities on Nevada’s roads to zero by increasing public awareness about the dangers of speeding, driving unrestrained, impaired driving, distracted driving, and more.
