Felony Eluding/ Officer Involved Shooting

On June 10th, 2023, the Nevada State Police dispatch center received a report of a reckless driver in the area of Veterans Parkway. Nevada State Police were dispatched to the area and located the vehicle parked at the Maverik gas station at 11795 Veterans Parkway in Reno.
A State Trooper made contact with an adult male driver, later identified as 34-year-old Darnelle Boykins, who then fled the scene. The Nevada State Police did not pursue the vehicle.
A short time later, State Troopers observed Boykins’s vehicle traveling around South Virginia Street and Kietzke Lane.
A State Trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop of Boykins’s vehicle, which was now observed to be missing the left rear tire. Boykins failed to yield to the Trooper’s marked patrol unit, and a pursuit was initiated.
During the pursuit, Boykins crashed his vehicle in the area of Moana Lane and Neil Road, and an officer involved shooting occurred.
Boykins was taken into custody and booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility.
No injuries were sustained as a result of the officer involved shooting.
The Department of Public Safety requested the Regional Officer Involved Shooting Protocol team.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigating agency, with the assistance of the Reno Police Department and the Sparks Police Department.
This is an active and ongoing investigation, and once complete, it will be submitted to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office for review.
As a result of the investigation to this point, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has charged Boykins with the following:
Assault with a deadly weapon, victim is a first responder
Own/possess a gun by a prohibited person
Discharge a gun at/in an occupied structure/vehicle/craft
