The Washoe County Consolidated Bomb Squad has been awarded $18,392 through the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance, as part of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The award period runs from April 1, 2026, through August 31, 2026.
This funding will support upgrades to the Bomb Squad’s communications infrastructure, improving the team’s ability to respond safely and effectively to hazardous device incidents and other high-risk situations.
The project includes the acquisition of ruggedized cellular routers and a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) antenna system to provide reliable, secure connectivity for robotic platforms, video transmission, and command operations in environments where traditional communications may be limited.
The primary goal of the project is to enhance operational efficiency and safety by improving communication reliability. Objectives include reducing communication disruptions, increasing standoff distances for technicians, and strengthening interoperability during multi-agency responses.
The Consolidated Bomb Squad serves a regional area of approximately 28,800 square miles across both urban and rural areas and responds to incidents involving explosive devices, hazardous materials, and suspicious packages throughout Washoe County and surrounding jurisdictions.
The anticipated outcomes include improved communication reliability, reduced response delays, enhanced technician safety, and stronger coordination among regional partners, ultimately improving the Bomb Squad’s ability to mitigate explosive threats and protect the community.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to advancing public safety through strategic investments in technology, equipment, and regional collaboration.
