On February 15, at approximately 10:00 a.m., deputies with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Our Place for a report of a runaway juvenile who had taken her parents’ vehicle.
Shortly after the vehicle was taken, the parents’ credit card was used at a gas station on USA Parkway, leading them to believe the juvenile may have been attempting to travel back to Chicago, Illinois, where she previously resided.
An Attempt to Locate (ATL) was broadcast to agencies across northern Nevada for the vehicle, and WCSO dispatch initiated a Rapid SOS request to assist in locating the juvenile. Dispatch personnel were able to successfully transmit the SOS notification, which helped track the vehicle’s location to Carlin, located outside of Elko, Nevada.
The Nevada Highway Patrol successfully located the vehicle. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, and the juvenile initially failed to yield but ultimately stopped without further incident.
The juvenile was taken into custody in Carlin and is currently being held on local charges.
“This case emphasizes the importance of swift coordination and communication across agencies,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “Through the combined efforts of our deputies, dispatch personnel, and our partners with the Nevada Highway Patrol, we were able to locate this juvenile before she left the state. I am grateful that the parents reported this to law enforcement immediately, allowing us to act swiftly, mobilize resources across jurisdictions, and bring this situation to a safe resolution.”
