RSONU Reports Non-Compliant Sex Offender Arrested in Reno

On October 9th, 2023, convicted sex offender Josh Powell-Simpson was arrested in Reno, Nevada.

While on an unrelated call in the area of Mill Street and Lake Street, law enforcement officers recognized Powell-Simpson as possibly being a wanted subject.

Contact was made with Powell-Simpson, and it was confirmed that he was wanted by the Nevada State Police Parole and Probation.

Powell-Simpson also had a warrant out of Reno for Petty Larceny.

Powell-Simpson was arrested and transported to the Washoe County jail where he was also charged with being a Sex Offender failing to register as required by NRS 179D.

While in jail, Powell-Simpson was charged with Battery by Prisoner and he is currently being held on $50,000 bail.

The Regional Sex Offender Notification Unit (RSONU) was formed in 1998 to be in compliance with federal law passed in 1997.   The RSONU operates as a regional, multi-jurisdictional unit comprising of Washoe County, the City of Sparks, the City of Reno and Nevada State Police Parole and Probation.  The RSONU’s jurisdictional boundaries encompass all of Washoe County, including the Cities of Reno and Sparks.

Currently, there are about 1400 registered sex offenders in the Reno, Sparks and Washoe County area.  These offenders are monitored by investigators from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, and Parole and Probation.
