LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES PARTNER TO OFFER 2024 REGIONAL CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY

Aug 20, 2024

Local law enforcement agencies, including the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, and the University of Nevada, Reno Police Department, are once again partnering to offer an exciting and intensive ten-week Regional Citizen’s Police Academy this fall. This program provides a unique opportunity for area residents to gain insight into the daily responsibilities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers.

We invite and encourage any interested community members to apply and learn how our law enforcement officers work to protect and serve the community.

This year’s academy will begin on October 1, 2024, with classes held every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will include two Saturday sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program will feature tours of local law enforcement facilities, along with demonstrations of police operations and tactics. Participants will also learn about the various entities within a police agency, including Detectives, Dispatch, and Special Operations teams—such as SWAT, K-9, Hostage Negotiations, and the Regional Consolidated Bomb Squad.

In addition to classroom instruction, several sessions will include hands-on activities, including emergency vehicle operations, firearms training, building search procedures, and participation in simulated training exercises.

The Regional Citizen’s Police Academy is offered free of charge and is open to all qualified applicants. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Washoe County. All applicants are required to pass a background check.

Class size is limited, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Reserve your spot today by submitting your application at Regional Citizen Police Academy (washoesheriff.com)
