NNPH recognizes 3 local convenience stores with Extra Mile Award

Oct 29, 2026

Oct. 29, 2026, Reno/Sparks, Nev. – The Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) – Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Program (CDIP) recognized three local convenience stores for creating healthier retail environments by removing tobacco and vaping advertisements from their storefronts.

NNPH’s Extra Mile Award is given to businesses and organizations in Washoe County that go above and beyond to create healthier environments, including the requirements listed in Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act.

The following businesses received an award at October’s District Board of Health meeting:

  • Vasser Market | 1870 Vassar St, #5, Reno, NV
  • Go Mart | 1755 Sutro St, Reno, NV
  • Corner Minit Mart | 1775 Mill St, Reno, NV

“These retailers have voluntarily taken an important step toward creating healthier storefront environments, and we hope their efforts encourage other businesses to do the same,” said Zarmish Tariq, a Health Educator for the CDIP program. “Their willingness to make these changes demonstrates how local businesses can play an important role in supporting tobacco prevention efforts and protecting youth from exposure to tobacco marketing.”

NNPH has honored several businesses with Extra Mile Awards since 2008 – see the full list on our website.

While previous awards have recognized smoke-free and vape-free environments, three most recent awards highlight another important aspect of tobacco prevention: reducing exposure to tobacco and vaping advertisements in retail settings.

Research shows that exposure to tobacco marketing can influence young people’s perceptions of tobacco products and increase the likelihood of initiation. By voluntarily removing these advertisements, retailers could help prevent youth from using tobacco or vape products.
