NNPH Celebrates National Public Health Week April 6-12

Apr 6, 2026

April 6, 2026. Reno/Sparks, Nev. – Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) is proud to join communities across the country in celebrating National Public Health Week, April 6–12, 2026. This year’s theme, “Ready. Set. Action!”, highlights the critical role public health plays in improving daily lives, protecting families, and strengthening communities.

“Public health is all around us, often working quietly behind the scenes to keep our community safe and healthy,” said Dr. Chad Kingsley, District Health Officer for Northern Nevada Public Health. “National Public Health Week is a time to recognize that impact and recommit to the work that ensures our region is prepared for whatever comes next.”

NNPH serves Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County with both outreach and education to prevent public health issues but also enforcement and response after a public health threat is identified.

By preventing disease, promoting wellness, and preparing for emerging health threats through a wide range of programs and partnerships, NNPH helps ensure residents are ready for health challenges by monitoring disease trends, promoting vaccinations, supporting maternal and child health, offering WIC benefits, and improving access to essential services.

The agency also helps the community get set for healthier living through environmental health initiatives, including restaurant and childcare inspections, food safety education, air quality programs such as the winter Burn Code, which reduces particulate pollution and protects respiratory health, and much more.

Taking action to protect the community is at the core of NNPH’s work. From disease surveillance and outbreak response to emergency preparedness planning and injury prevention efforts, NNPH continues to expand population health strategies that address the root causes of health disparities and build a healthier future for all residents.

National Public Health Week is also an opportunity to recognize the dedication of public health professionals and community partners whose efforts help prevent illness, ensure safe environments, and prepare for emergencies.

Throughout the week, NNPH encourages residents to learn more about public health, take steps to protect their own health, and support efforts that make Northern Nevada a safer, healthier place to live.
