Oct. 6, 2022. Reno/Sparks, NV – The popular AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, a tool used to provide information about fire locations, smoke plumes, near real-time air quality and what actions to take, is now available in Spanish. According to the U.S. Census Bureau about 25.9% of the population in Washoe County is Hispanic or Latino.
“Washoe County has been severely impacted by smoke from wildfires in the region in the past several years and it is vital that all people living in areas affected by wildfire smoke have access to reliable information in their language to take actions to protect their health,” said Francisco Vega, Division Director for Air Quality Management. “This is a step in the right direction to eliminate language barriers preventing people in the community from obtaining critical information in their language.”
To access the Fire and Smoke Map in Spanish, visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ or in the AirNow mobile app. Once on the site, click on the globe icon on the top right corner of the page next to the magnifying glass and select “Español.”
The AirNow Fire and Smoke Map was launched in August 2020 and can also be accessed in the AirNow mobile app in the Apple App Store or Google Play store.
