Local Carnicería joins Washoe County Health District to incentivize healthier food options for the Latino Community

May 26, 2023

May 25, 2023. Reno/Sparks, NV – The Washoe County Health District (WCHD) has partnered with Carnicería Tres Amigos on Sutro Street to increase selection of healthy foods that residents in underserved communities can access. This is the first Latino market to join The Healthy Corner Store project.

Carnicerías, or butcher shops, are go-to stores for many Washoe County residents due to their convenient locations and ideal ingredients to make Latin American meals.

As the latest participating store of the Healthy Corner Store Project, Carnicería Tres Amigos now has bilingual signage and literature to motivate and/or educate consumers to make healthier choices, with the goal of improving health disparities and chronic illnesses while intentionally and authentically reaching the community members this carnicería serves.

The Healthy Corner Store project, better known as Grab Healthy, is a collaboration with store owners to stock and market healthy foods in neighborhood corner stores. WCHD provides store owners and managers guidance on what foods to purchase, marketing and training materials, and bins to display the healthy foods; the store owners/managers are then responsible for the purchase of the products. The initial pilot project began with three local corner stores participating in 2022: 7-Eleven – 1770 Sutro St. Reno, NV 89512, Reno Food & Discount Liquor – 1123 E 6th St. Reno, NV 89512, and Vassar Market – 1870 Vassar St. Reno, NV 89502.

WCHD is optimistic to continue growing the program and get more stores involved. Store owners/managers interested in participating in the Healthy Corner Store project, can contact Amanda Santos at 775-328-6158, email arsantos@washoecounty.gov, or visit https://www.washoecounty.gov/health/programs-and-services/cchs/chronic-disease-prevention/Community-tools/HCS.php.
