A Reno man has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years. 56-year-old Carlos Fletcher (dob 2/14/68) was charged in connection with a Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT) case. Fletcher had previously pled guilty to Attempted Kidnapping of a Minor and Being a Habitual Felon.
In May of 2022, a detective with the HEAT team went to Fletcher’s home, searching for a missing 14-year-old girl who was possibly being sex trafficked. The defendant told police that the girl had been staying at his apartment but had just left. A short time later when law enforcement returned to the apartment, again seeking the 14-year-old, they found a 16-year-old girl who was also known to be a sex trafficking victim. Fletcher’s parole officer and a detective searched the defendant’s phone, where they found a conversation between Fletcher and the girl discussing sex.
At the same time, a member of the HEAT team utilized an undercover social media account and posing as a 15-year-old girl, sent Fletcher a friend request. The defendant immediately responded and after acknowledging that he believed he was talking to a child, proceeded to request nude photographs, send explicit messages, and offered to pay for sex. Within two hour of Fletcher initiating contact, he attempted to meet up with the believed child and was arrested by law enforcement.
During sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Darcy Cameron argued for life without parole, citing Fletcher’s extensive criminal history, the fact that detectives attempted to put the defendant on the right path multiple times with warnings, and the fact that he was on parole when this case occurred.
