The Honorable Judge Egan Walker has sentenced 34-year-old Jeremy Chatman to the maximum sentence, after he was previously convicted of Attempted Murder with the Use of a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Battery with the Use of a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Substantial harm, and Battery by a Parolee with the Use of a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm after setting his ex-girlfriend on fire.
Chatman was given consecutive sentences of 8-20 years on both the Attempted Murder charge and the Deadly Weapons enhancement, 6-15 years on the Domestic Battery charge, and 6-15 years for the Battery by a Parolee charge for a total of 70 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 28 years.
During sentencing, the State shared a written statement from the victim. In part, she shared how the attack affected her not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally and how she has had to learn to adapt to this new life. The incident had left her with burns on her arms, chest, hands, back, neck, and head – almost half of her body. Before announcing his sentence, Judge Walker shared that the injuries the victim experienced were some of the worst he had seen in his 30+ year career.
Deputy District Attorney Travis Lucia argued for the maximum sentence against Chatman, citing the premeditation in the attack, his desire to kill the victim, and his extensive violent criminal history. Chatman has 4 prior felony and 19 misdemeanor convictions and was on parole for a different case when he lured the victim outside of her home and set her on fire.
“Today, justice has been delivered in a case marked by tragic, lifelong injuries to the victim,” said District Attorney Chris Hicks. “Mr. Chatman will rightfully spend the rest of his life behind bars, as ensured by today’s sentencing. It is cases such as this that drive our commitment to advocating for crime victims.”
