Man That Slashed Employees is Convicted

Sentencing Set for June

May 23, 2024

A Reno man accused of Robbery with a Deadly Weapon and Battery with a Deadly Weapon was found guilty of both charges by a jury. 37-year-old Juan Arellano-Guerrero (dob 5/6/86) is slated to be sentenced on June 20th.

Last July, Arellano walked into a shop at the Meadowood Mall and attempted to steal more than $200 worth of merchandise. Two of the store’s loss prevention staff approached the defendant and attempted to detain him. During the confrontation, Arellano pulled out a small cutting tool, similar to garden shears, and slashed at the two men, striking one in the cheek and the other in the forearm. The employees released Arellano and he ran from the scene. Both victims were medically treated for their injuries.

After watching video surveillance footage, officers with the Reno Police Department were able to identify several distinct tattoos on the defendant’s person. Three days after the incident, patrol officers found Arellano and arrested him.

Deputy District Attorney Thomas Sertic will be seeking habitual offender status at sentencing, due to the five prior felony convictions the defendant has, including Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
