Local Soccer Coach Receives Two Life Sentences

Pled Guilty to Sexually Assaulting Two Victims

Dec 23, 2024

DA Chris Hicks announces that a Sparks man has received two life sentences after pleading guilty to charges involving his sexual abuse of two minor boys. 36-year-old Sergio Ortiz will be eligible for parole after 35 years.

Sparks Police Department detectives arrested Ortiz in April of 2024, and the case initially centered on a single victim. However, Ortiz identified a second victim during his confession to detectives. Based on the confession, detectives were able to locate the second victim and confirm the abuse occurred. Both victims were known to Ortiz, with one child meeting Ortiz through his involvement in a youth soccer program. The sexual abuse occurred between 2013-2018, when the victims were in elementary school.

Ortiz pled guilty to one count of Sexual Assault of a Minor Under 16 and one count of Lewdness with a Minor Under 14. The Honorable Lynne Jones presided over sentencing and imposed the life sentences.
