A jury has convicted Daniel Pena-Aguilar (dob 12/3/99) of all charges: Domestic Battery Strangulation; Domestic Battery, Bribe or Intimidate a Witness to Influence Testimony; and Prevent or Dissuade a Person from Testifying.
Last October, Pena-Aguilar was arrested by Reno Police officers after he battered the 21-year-old mother of his child. The defendant had choked, punched, and slapped the victim in their apartment, causing her to leave her baby and flee to a neighbor’s home. The victim was able to use the neighbor’s cell phone to call 911 and when officers arrived, Pena-Aguilar remained inside his apartment with the couple’s one-year-old child. Reno Police Department Officers, including those trained in Crisis Negotiation, stayed on scene for more than two hours, speaking with Pena-Aguilar until eventually he and the child came outside.
Following this incident and throughout the course of the case, Pena-Aguilar made numerous calls to family members and the victim in an attempt to have the victim not come to court and testify.
During this trial, the District Attorney’s Office focused on the physical injuries officers observed on scene and statements the victim made, consistent with her injuries. Pena-Aguilar has one prior Battery conviction against the same victim from 2022.
Sentencing is set for August 27th before the Honorable Lynne Jones.
